An extremely rare and original US Civil War Union Soldier's knapsack. Looks to be based on The Model 1853/55 Knapsack and appears to be made from a painted canvas? , with leather carrying straps that were probably crossed at the chest. Maker stamped to the leather - E.

ROBINSON NEW YORK" and also stamped with the inspector's name OF "RICHARDS? The dimensions of the knapsack are 17.5 inches (height), 17 inches (width) and when opened up completely, 32 inches. This style of Civil War knapsack is featured in the books that feature army equipment of the period - see the pics. Rare opportunity to acquire a seldom seen item of military equipment issued to an ordinary Union soldier.
