CW Sutler's Chit or Scrip 2nd New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. 25 Cent
This is an original MINT example of a Civil War period 25 cent sutler's "chit" or script from the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. It measures approximately 6" by 2-3/4". A sutler's chit was a paper scrip that could be redeemed at a sutler's store. Sutlers were civilians who were given sales commissions by the U. Army to sell goods to soldiers. They were often the only local suppliers of non-military goods, and could be found operating stores on or nearby posts, forts, or camps. Sutler's scrip was only redeemable at the sutler's store, and was not redeemable at other stores. Sutler scrip is rare, with most having a RARITY VALUE OF 7 and is seldom seen in auctions. However, when it does appear, it's of interest to Civil War enthusiasts, numismatics, and notaphilists.
