43rd Regiment, New York Volunteers between November 20th, 1861 and March 30th, 1862. The 5th letter is written by "Leut Wadsworth A Levidson Surg US Vols in Charge".

The 6th letter, dated September 24, 1874 is written and signed by R. (last name not legible) and counter signed by J. The personal letters by Sebolt are written on patriotic stationary with a closed tear to one letter and a spit to another letter. Sebolt's letters are difficult to decipher and have several misspelled words.

The first letter written on 8" x 10" paper, 1 page long, is dated November 20 and addressed to his friend "Mister Sullivan Smith". Sebolt discusses a general review of the troops - "Thar was eighty thousan troops thar we had a bulley time". The second letter written on 8" x 10" paper, 1 page long, is dated November 26, 1861, and addressed Dear Wife. The contents are generally about health and weather.

The third letter written on 8" x 10" paper, 2 pages long, is dated December 10, 1861, and also addressed to his wife. Sebolt is glad to have heard from her and tells his wife about the weather and living in tents. The last letter written by Sebolt, written on 8" x 10" paper and 2 pages long, is dated March 30, 1862. The letter is addressed to his wife and it appears Sebolt is trying to get home.

The fifth letter, written on a single sheet, one sided, 8" x 10" paper is signed by the Surgeon in charge and has given the command to release Sebolt from duty to a disability. This letter is split into two section with no missing text. The last letter in this group came from the United States of America Department of the Interior Minor Children's Pensions Pension Bureau.

" The letter is two pages long and starts with the statement - "it is hereby certified that in conformity with the laws of the United States the minor children herein named of William Sebolt who was a Sergt Co H 43rd Regt.. Are entitles while living under the age of sixteen years to a pension at the rate of eight dollars commencing on the eleventh day of December 1865.... They are each also entitled to two dollars a month additional commencing sixteen Henry M 25 July 1866.

Item #11934 William Sebolt (or Seybolt) was born in Otsego County and enlisted in the 43rd N. He died in April 1863 most likely from a disability he received during the War. The 43rd Regiment was in the Army of the Potomac and was in most of the major battles including Antietam, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. From New York State Military Museum: SEYBOLT , WILLIAM.

Enlisted, August t 12, 1861, at Cooperstown, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. K , August t 30, 1861; promoted sergeant, January or February, 1862; transferred to Co.
