CIVIL WAR ZOUAVE OFFICERS SWORD NY 3rd Regiment (ALBANY) ZOUAVE SABER

  

Shown for sale is an early Zouave officers sword from the U. Civil War and marked for the 3rd NY Regiment known as the "Albany" Zouaves. The best sword guys in the world viewed this sword last week at Mansfield and the consensus is it is of British manufacture from the 1840/1850's for a New York militia regiment, which then became New York regiments in our Civil War. There are no maker marks on the sword, only the NY 3 on the hilt and NY 6 on the brass scabbard. No one had a problem with the mismatch as there are a dozen ways this may have occurred, either through fraternal trade by brother officers, or one scabbard or sword was wrecked and a matching scabbard/sword put in it's place.

What is important is that it is all period and it is all there right down to the original chain on the hilt/hand guard. A very rare and unusual sword to which everyone agreed it saw service not only in one of the many militia outfits that was found across America in the 1840/1850s, but one that became a Zouave regiment early in our American Civil War. Truly a rare and amazing piece of our nations history.
