"Campaigns of the Civil War" and "The Navy in the Civil War, " complete in 16 hardcover volumes. First edition, published by Charles Scribner's Sons between 1881 and 1883.
1 through 12 comprise "Campaigns of the Civil War, " covering the war on land, while Vols. 13 through 15 comprise "The Navy in the Civil War, " covering the war on the seas and rivers. 16 is a statistical record of the war. As far as I can tell after scouring the web, this is a rare complete first edition. Some sellers are offering mixed sets with different bindings, reprint editions in hardback or softcover, or partial sets of the first edition, but I could not find another complete first edition. All volumes bound in blue cloth with embossed titles and illustrations showing a stack consisting of a musket, sword, lance and cannon plunger, with the title of each volume in gold gilt on the front cover and spine. All are in quite good condition, with tight bindings and all pages intact, though with some signs of normal wear. Each volume is illustrated by maps (many of them foldout maps) and plans prepared under the direction of the authors, and the books were released in the chronological order of the Campaigns they dealt with. Here's a look at the individual volumes, with the few flaws noted. I - "The Outbreak of the Rebellion, " by John G. Nicolay, private secretary to President Lincoln, published in 1881. Nicolay says in the preface that he had to "lay aside temporarily a larger and more important literary task" to write this introductory volume, upon urgent and repeated request from the publishers. With index and six maps, 220 pages, followed by a five-page description of the whole publication series and a preview of the volumes already published. II - "From Fort Henry to Corinth, " by M. Force, late Brigadier-General and Brevet Major General, U.
Commanding First Division, 17th Corps, published in 1881. With eight maps and index, 204 pages, followed by publisher's materials. III - "The Peninsula: McClellan's Campaign of 1862, " by Alexander S. Webb, President of the College of the City of New York, formerly Major-General Assigned, and Chief of Staff, Army of the Potomac, published in 1881. IV - "The Army Under Pope, " by John Codman Ropes, member of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, published in 1881. With eight maps and plans and index, 229 pages, followed by publisher's materials.

And Commander of the First Corps at Gettysburg, published in 1882.

VII - The Army of the Cumberland, by Henry M. And Secretary of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland, published in 1882. With seven maps and plans and index, 289 pages, followed by publisher's materials.

X - "The March to the Sea; Franklin and Nashville, " by Jacob D.With 10 maps and plans and index, 265 pages, followed by publisher's materials. XI - "The Shenandoah Valley in 1864, " by George E. Pond, Associate Editor of the Army and Navy Journal, published in 1883.

This volume includes a "Special Announcement" that the publishers had decided to publish a Supplementary Volume, the "Statistical Record of the Civil War, " which is included with this set. With 10 large foldout maps attached to the rear of the book, plus index, 451 pages.
A former owner signed the front endleaf in pencil, and the rear hinge is cracked. Then come the three volumes of "The Navy in the Civil War".
