Nice ambrotype of a civil war soldier. CHECK OUT THE SCHOONMAKER AMBROTYPE AD I FOUND FROM AN 1859 ISSUE OF THE TROY DAILY TIMES. The soldier has all his buttons tinted with gold and is posed wearing his hat, and possibly a knife in his belt. The ambrotype is of 9th plate size, (2" by 2 1/2"), and is housed in a leather case with an embossed geometric design.
The red velvet pad bears the name of the photography studio, Schoonmakers, River Street, Troy New York. The ambrotype appears to be in fine shape. The case is in nice shape and has had its leather spine rebound. The single latch is intact and works fine. The red velvet pad is in excellent condition.
