UP FOR SALE IS A COLLECTION OF (30) 1861 CIVIL WAR LETTERS FROM UNION SOLDIER, WILLIAM H. MITCHELL TO HIS WIFE FROM MONTHS JUNE THROUGH DECEMBER. MITCHELL WAS A UNION SOLDIER ATTACHED TO THE 38th REGIMENT NEW JERSEY INFANTRY. CONDITION - LETTERS are in varying states of POOR Condition. Please see photos for best description.

LETTERS WERE PULLED FROM AN OLD WORN BOX FROM SHELVING IN BARN LOCATED IN SOUTHERN VIRGINIA. SOME CONTENTS OF LETTER INCLUDE TALKS OF FIRST BATTLE AT BULL RUN, MISSING SOLDIERS BY NAME, SEVERAL OFFICER NAMES, MEASEL OUTBREAK, LOSS OF FRIENDS. PRESIDENT LINCOLN IS MENTIONED IN LETTER TOWARDS END OF 1861. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS. 38th Regiment, New York Infantry.

Organized at New York City and mustered in June 3, 1861. Left State for Washington, D. Attached to Willcox's Brigade, Heintzelman's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, to August, 1861. Howard's Brigade, Division of the Potomac, to October, 1861.

Sedgwick's Brigade, Heintzelman's Division, Army of the Potomac, to March, 1862. 3rd Division, 3rd Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to July, 1862.

2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 3rd Army Corps, to June, 1863. Duty in the Defences of Washington, D. Battle of Bull Run, Va. Ordered to the Peninsula, Va. Peninsula Campaign April to August.

Siege of Yorktown April 5-May 4. Battle of Williamsburg May 5. Battle of Seven Pines or Fair Oaks May 31-June 1. Seven days before Richmond June 25-July 1. Battles of Oak Grove near Seven Pines June 25.

White Oak Swamp and Glendale June 30. At Harrison's Landing till August 16. Movement to Fortress Monroe, thence to Centreville August 16-26.

Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia August 27-September 2. Battles of Groveton August 29; Bull Run August 30; Chantilly September 1. "Mud March" January 20-24, 1863.

Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. Battle of Chancellorsville May 1-5. Three years men transferred to 40th Regiment New York Infantry June 3. Mustered out June 22, 1863, expiration of term.

Regiment lost during service 3 Officers and 72 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 39 Enlisted men by disease.
