RARE! Estate Fresh 3c DOUGAN The Hatter ENCASED POSTAGE STAMP Civil War Token

  
This token comes from a long time collector's estate, and has not been on the market in many years. Rated as Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known) according to Fred Reed. Trow's New York City Directory for 1865 provides the following: Dougan, John A. Dougan was affiliated with New York 12th Regiment, Infantry, and during the Civil War is said to have been active in helping to recruit and equip soldiers in the regiment at his own personal cost. Dougan, with business premises in New York City, was one of three of John Gault's customers engaged in the hat trade; the other two were F. Buhl & Company in Detroit and White, who was also located in New York City.

Dougan's encasements are the only ones in the series to bear an illustration of the product advertised, a top hat. Token measures 19.2mm in diameter. All original, with no repairs. Mica covering is intact, but does have some scuffs and small dents, as shown. Please see large photos for exact condition.
