This antique newspaper is an original, not a reproduction. The paper is browned and fragile, with some tears and chips that go into the print on the bottom of some of the pages. They don't really detract from the bulk of the information. There are lots of ads, and all kinds of information about the Civil War. The fear at the time was that Great Britain was going to enter the War on the side of the Rebels.

The paper states that the way to keep this from happening is to end the War, and put an END to slavery once and for all. The mills of Europe depended on cotton, and they were willing to run the blockades to get the cotton. The paper has all kinds of information that is relevant today, especially regarding slavery and that it was one of the biggest reasons to end the rebellion. One Northern idea at the time was to send the Northern troops into battle with two rifles - one to use, and one to give to a freed slave. There were huge numbers of "contraband" (run away slaves) coming in from the South, and they were forwarded on to the Generals so they could fight.

The Newspaper has all kinds of ads, as well as local information, as well. It is a great snapshot of history in the early stages of the Civil War (1862 was still fairly early). There were all kinds of rumors that the paper recorded and tried to debunk - "fake news" that made the rounds! The paper has some issues - the paper has really tiny print, and I had to read it with a magnifying glass.

I think they must have had better eyesight then than I do! The paper has wrinkled a bit, which makes it even a bit harder to read. There is some wear along the interior seams and bottom edges where the paper has torn a bit, and where there are some chips (some missing paper).

The paper isn't as a high of rag content (the amount of cotton as opposed to tree pulp), as most of the raw materials were given over to the war effort.
