The commission was established to honor the dead from selected battlefields. The books present an extraordinary collection of Gettysburg history. First, it is a history of the historic battle at Gettysburg, providing the details on the battles fought during this campaign.

Second it is an excellent battlefield guide, providing a guide and history to the various monuments erected on the battlefield with complete details of the history of the monuments and the inscriptions and dedication ceremonies. Third, it is an invaluable reference to the service of the numerous New York regiments that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg complete with details of their battles. The book presents each unit that participated in the campaign, gives its history and provides information about any monument dedicated to it and the details of the dedication ceremony.

These would include the orations, addresses and regimental histories of the units. This important, three-volume book set is profusely illustrated with photographs and five lithographic battle maps folded and inserted in pastedown pockets in each volume.

All maps are present and in fine condition. THIS BOOK SET IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This wonderful, First Edition book set is in excellent overall condition. This is handsomely bound in attractive, steel-gray covers, with impressed, lettering on the cover and spine, and with the image of the Seal of the State of New York centered on a backdrop consisting of American flags and military accruements. The exteriors are clean with no bumping; the covers have light rubbing and edge wear.

The images in the center of the covers remain sharp, bright and vivid. The interiors are clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The interiors are free of any writing, smudging, foxing, stamps or pasteboards. There is some browning to the front end pages.

The books are loaded with photographs. They also contain handsome, full-color lithograph maps that are stored in the front pocket on the inside, front cover of each book. All three books are solidly bound; they have no looseness or lean and all hinges are in fine condition. This is not an ex-library set. This is a large book set; each book measures 11 inches by 9 inches by 2 inches.
