LUDWIG, PUBLISHER NEW YORK, IN 1882 This original, first edition, antique book constitutes a history with roster of the Tenth New York Volunteers (National Zouaves). The 10th New York National Zouaves was recruited in New york city and Brooklyn and mustered into U.

Service, April 27 and 30 and May 2 and 7, 1861 for two years service. The unit embarked for Fortress Monroe on June 5, and joined the reserve during the Battle of Big Bethal.

The book participated in the Peninsula Campaign in 1862 as part of the V Corps. It fought bravely at the Second Battle of Bull Run with significant losses.

It was present at the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and fought at Shepherdstown. The unit fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where almost one-half of the members of the regiment were casualties. It spent a portion of the winter performing guard duty and the original two year members not reenlisting were mustered out at New York on May 7, 1863. The remainder of the regiment was consolidated and, with addition veterans and recruits, became the 8th New York Artillery.

This battalion was active at the Battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Laural Hill, the North Anna River, Totopotomy and Cold Harbor. It then served during the long Siege of Petersburg, including at Weldons Railroad, Deep Bottom, Strawberry plains, Reamss Station, the Boydton Road, Hatchers Run, White Oak Road and in the final assault on the fortification on April 2, 1865.

It began the pursuit of Lees army and provided guard duty near Richmond unit being ordered home. The 10th was mustered out at Munsons Hill, Virginia, June 30, 1865.

THE BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, antique, first edition book is bound in royal blue covers with bright gold, lettering on the spine and the image or crossing unit flags and military hardware on the cover. The book contains a comprehensive unit roster with details of the Civil War service of each soldier. The exterior is clean with no bumping or discernable edge wear. The cover has some water only affecting the front cover. The book is protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #2).

The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The book has no writing, smudging, foxing or other markings, except some foxing to the end pages. It is not an ex-library book.

The book has solid binding throughout. It has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book has several maps, some being foldout maps and a frontispiece illustrations of unit soldiers at Fort Monroe. It also has casualty data and charts. Overall this is a nice, first edition, original history of this hard-fought unit.
