You are purchasing a very unique collection of personal items from a former Civil War soldier named Thomas Ryan. He enlisted on April 24, 1861 in Seneca, New York and was assigned to the 33rd New York Regiment, Company C under the command of Captain Chester H. The 33rd was nicknamed the "Waterloo Wright Guards" and saw action in several conflicts, including Manassas, Antietam and Fredricksburg.

There is a book written about the 33rd of New York called "Story of the Thirty-Third" written in 1866. Thomas Ryan mustered out on June 2, 1863 in Geneva, New York. Ryan then re-enlisted on December 29, 1863 and was assigned to the New York 11th regiment, Company L under the command of Ira L. They were used for heavy artillery. I don't know if they saw action after this date. He then mustered out on August 21, 1865 in Washington, D. What you get in this lot. Original 1863 discharge paper that is signed and sealed and has a 5-cent revenue stamp of George Washington. Second discharge paper from 1865.

Has some side notes where it appears he tried to get veterans benefits later in life and it looks like he was denied. Photo of Thomas Ryan as an old man.

Very rare to have an image to go along with their papers. Ribbon that says "Company C, 33rd NY Vol Infantry". Ribbon that says Sixth annual reunion. Original envelope that his papers were sent from D. It is addressed to Thomas Ryan in Quincy, Michigan on Feb.

It likely is from when he was trying to get more veteran benefits. The item "Civil War Union soldier Discharge papers, ribbons, photo 33rd New York regiment" is in sale since Sunday, April 22, 2018.
