An interesting 1864 letter written and signed by Lieutenant Francis D. Barnum of the 115th New York Volunteers. Written while his regiment was near Beaufort , South Carolina, Barnum wrote to a Mr.
Harris, who was the post chaplain, to request a visit to one of his men who was sick in the hospital, Private Nicholas Carert. The 115ths Chaplain Sylvester W. Clemans had been discharged the previous month. Unfortunately, records indicate Private Carert died the next day, October 29.
Will you be kind enough to visit Mr. Vols in Gen Hospital No. Carert is very low and has requested me to ask our Chaplain to call and see him.
Chaplain Clemens is not at present with the Regiment and I have therefore taken the liberty to as you to do so. Lieut Comdg Co I 115th NYV. The letter was written on one side of a stationery sheet measuring about 8 x 9 3/4.It is in good condition with light foxing and toning.
