United States Dispensatory, 11th Edition, printed 1858. Personal copy belonging to Charles H. Andrus, Assistant Surgeon and later Surgeon to the 128th NY Infantry. Marked by him on both ends, denoting presence at Baton Rouge, LA, September 29th, 1863, where the 128th was engaged in the Siege of Port Hudson through July of that year.

It was the final engagement in the Union campaign to recapture the Mississippi, the longest siege in US military history. The Volunteers' Colonel David Smith Cowles was killed early in the siege, and Andrus attended to him, as documented by letters.

Colonel Cowles was a cousin of Andrus' wife, Louisa Cowles, and brother to Edward Pitkin Cowles, a justice of the Supreme Court of New York. Andrus is mentioned in many letters of the period, especially for his work as a surgeon during the bloody siege at Port Hudson, in which the Union had 5,000 killed and wounded, with another 5,000 dead of disease in that foreign tropical clime.

Andrus was a native of Poughkeepsie, NY, and enlisted at Hudson City, NJ on 8/30/1862 as Assistant Surgeon with the 176th New York Infantry, Company S, then commissioned into Field and Staff with the 128th. He was promoted to Surgeon on 7/20/1864 and mustered out 4/27/1866 in Savannah, Georgia. He descended from a long line of military men and his son, Captain Edwin Proctor Andrus, was captain of the 5th US Cavalry. Another son, Willard Parker Andrus became the State Fish and Game Commissioner of Minnesota.
