A nice April 1864 letter written by Private Mason S. Chambers of the 169th New York, the Troy Regiment. Chambers was then at Albany, presumably recruiting for the regiment. The 169th was then at Suffolk, Virginia (despite Chamberss belief they were at Jacksonville) and in May would be sent to Butlers Army of the James at Bermuda Hundred.

I have not much news to write. We have had very rainy weather but it is a fine day and the roads are getting dry. We have a good many recruits here now. I believe the draft has been postponed until the first of June. Private Sanford Sturtevant of the 142nd who is on duty here has gone on a visit to Ogdensburgh for five days.

I have not heard from the Regt for a long time. I believe they are at Jacksonville Florida.

I saw Jim Crookshank last week. There is no news from the Army. We have a good many deserters here, but we take good care of them. We lock them up in cells every night.

I had a bad cold when I wrote to John, but soon got over it. If we stay here all summer Ill go up to Lisbon and see you. I might go for a day or two, but I think Ill wait till summer. This will be a pleasant place in the summer, I think.

We have good beds and a good room and good food. Well I guess Ill have to close for this time as I have no news. Give my love to all. The letter was written on three pages of a lined sheet measuring about 5 x 8. It is in very good condition with very little toning.
