A lovely English-made side knife with its original sheath, a style popular with soldiers. The knife measures 8 5/8 overall with a blade length of 4 1/2.The ricasso is marked ALEXANDER / SHEFFIELD. Alexander was a New York-based importer of Sheffield-made knives.
Another mark, N Y with a shield between the letters is two inches from the guard. This knife has certainly seen a lot of use, as the blades contouring suggests it had a traditional bowie clip point that has been worn down into more of a spear point. The guard I believe is bronze. The scales are stag, with a deep scratch on one side that doesnt penetrate all the way through the scale. The matching leather sheath also has the N Y mark with the shield. Please see my other items for more interesting Civil War letters, documents, and images.
