Grant's Confidant and Secretary of War. The Life of John A. Rawlins Lawyer, Assistant Adjutant-General, Chief of Staff, Major General of Volunteers, and Secretary of War By James Harrison Wilson. New York: The Neale Publishing Company. Hardcover bound in blue cloth.
Moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. The gutter is cracking between the front flyleaf and the frontis with the webbing exposed. The last page of the index and the rear flyleaf is creased at the top corner. The text block is sound, and the text appears a little toned but generally clean. Not much has been written about James A. He served throughout the Civil War and was U. Grant's confidant, often protecting the General against charges of insobriety. When Grant was elected President and took office, he chose Rawlins as his Secretary of War. Rawlins took some controversial actions while Secretary of War, but he also suffered from tuberculosis, and he died only five months into his term. Pages 45 through 345 of this book focus on his time in the Civil War (Chapters 4-16).
