Battery H 1st NY Light Artillery. 9/2/1864 thru 10/14/1864 Alvin L. 43 Consecutive Days of Diary Entries (15 sides of pages). True One-Of-A-Kind Civil War Diary/Journal. Condition (scale 1-10) 7.5 - Very Good, Used Condition for a diary thats over 150 years old & carried by a Union soldier during the Civil War.

Soldier info available on the Internet - Schellenger, Alvin L. Also listed as Alvin L. Diary of Battery H (filed under general documents at the beginning of the regiment).

Schellenger enlisted in September 1864 at Stockholm, Battery H. Was mustered out in May 1865.

His handwriting is easy to read. Pages overall clean & crisp with some smudges, dirt, or marks on some pages. Interesting mystery the soldier apparently erased his pencil entries in this diary prior to enlistment; well never know why or if after or before his service (last photo shows one erasure; may be possible to uncover the erased writing with some skill &/or tools). PLEASE see the photos for the most accurate, objective description of the condition as all pages with entries are photographed.

Short Excerpts Please understand it may contain unintentional errors and will have some corrected spelling. 9/2/1864 - From the time of the firing from Fort Sumpter April 11, 1861 by the Confederate States, I have had a desire to be a soldier to help put down the rebellion and when President Lincoln made a call on July 18, 1864 for more men I felt it was my duty to help save the Union. I decided I must enlist.

Today on Friday, 2, 1864, I went and enlisted under Recruiting Officer Tucker at Bicknellville. 9/16/1864 At 8:30am saw a man slung up by the thumbs and stayed there until the skin with the nail on his right thumb came off. 9/21/1864 Could hear heavy firing at the front, was ordered to be ready. 9/23/1864 - went to see where the guard had shot one of the substitutes for trying to desert. 9/24/1864 Heavy firing this morning up at the left and at the right.

About a mile to the east the cannonading was still heavier. Was very quiet in the afternoon.

9/25/1864 (Sunday) Went to hear a sermon preached by one of the Christian Commission. 10/4/1864 Last night the captain came in after dusk and said that if we could hold on our position as it was that the rebellion would have to surrender. 10/5/1864 After breakfast was ordered up to the front. About 5 reached the main line of works. The battle of Peebles Farm was fought here two days ago. 10/8/1864 The battery was ordered to fire some shots into a house where a lot of rebel sharpshooters were. PLEASE ask if you'd like additional photos or have any other questions.
