Letter written by Private William M. Hill of the 123rd New York on August 20, 1864. Hill writes to his mother that he was in that battle that you spoke about, & it was a hard fight too. Based on the date, he may be referring to the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, in which the 123rd lost heavily. Remarking how so few letters had been received, he joked that the Rebs might [have] got the letter first He then discusses his supper of coffee, hard tack, & pork before noting this would be the same meal hed expect for breakfast. The letter was written on three pages of a four-page bifolium sheet measuring about 5 x 8. Excellent condition with creases at the original mailing folds. Dear Mother I received your letter the 20 & was very glad to hear from you & to hear you are all well. Your letter found me well. We was in that battle that you spoke about, & it was a hard fight too. The Rebs might got the letter first if they did. I hope it will do them some good to read it, for they want something to do them good.

Well Mother I must stop & get supper. That will be coffee, hard tack, & pork, also the same for breakfast, but we are glad to get that. I wish Father would send that tobacco, for it is very hard to get down here. I hope he will get well for he was a fine boy.

I would like to see him & the rest of the boys up there. It rained all night & is very cool this morning. It looks so it might rain more. Granger if he was down here he could get some nice hoop pols.

Tell John to write as soon as he [can]. I would like to hear from him & you must write often for you dont know how much [good] it does us to hear from home. I must stop for this time. My love to you all.

From your son William M. Tell Ella to write as soon as she can get time. Please see my other items for more interesting Civil War letters, documents, and images. The item "1864 Civil War 123rd NY Letter We was in that battle. It was a hard fight" is in sale since Monday, December 28, 2020.
