Soldiers Letter: September 18th, 1863, four page letter from Johnny Fiseman of the 133rd NY, in bold pencil---- Carrion Crow Bayou, La. We have marched 200 miles from New Orleans and I do not know how many hundreds more I will have to go. Mentions that he wants papers from home. Mentions a brisk skirmish with the Rebels.

Was on picket and were driven in by the Rebs and we were called out to relieve them. The firing kept up during the night on both sides. No one was hurt on my post.

The next day the Rebs came out of the woods and the cavalry charged them and the artillery gave them grape and canister, we were trying to flank them but they got away but our cavalry chased them seven miles and it was a first rate skirmish. Mentions that they are living first rate in chickens and sweet potatoes... Need stamps GREAT LETTER has some good war stories etc.

INFO---On October 15, 1863 an engagement between troops of America's fractured North and South was fought on the plantation's grounds. Union forces occupied the lower floor of the Chretien mansion and set up camp on the lawn.
