This is an interesting December 1862 Civil War letter written and signed by twenty-six officers of the 155th New York Volunteers to their brigade commander, Brigadier General Michael Corcoran. The 155th, then at Newport News , was part of the " Corcoran Legion , " a brigade of mostly Irish volunteers personally raised by Corcoran.

In the letter, the officers urged Corcoran to appoint Mr. Bernard McCabe as sutler for the regiment (an 1862 Act of Congress left the appointment of regimental sutlers to brigade commanders). Signers include Colonel William McEvily , Lieutenant Colonel James P. Flood , and the captains and lieutenants of several companies.

We the undersigned Officers of the 155th Regt. Most respectfully solicit you to appoint Mr Bernard McCabe sutler of this Regt. McCabe is a gentleman long known to us. Should you appoint Mr McCabe, we will vouch for his integrity as we feel sure that he will do Justice to the men of the Regt.

We therefore in consideration of his disinterested labours in our behalf, most respectfully ask for his appointment. We have honor to be Sir.

John McNally, Lt Co K [wounded at Edenton Road, Virginia, 4/15/63]. The letter was written upon two 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" stationery sheets that were pasted together to form one large 7 3/4" x 18" document. At some point the two sheets were separated by a smooth cut just underneath the bottom edge of the first sheet, and across the top of Colonel McEvily's signature (see photos). The letter is otherwise in excellent condition with light foxing and toning.
