Offered for sale is this 1861 to 1879 Civil War Era Autograph Book with 31 names and 18 CDV photographs from mainly Smyrna, New York State in good to very good overall condition having a great old antique look to it! It contains a photograph showing Dr. Beebe and another of his wife Julia. Beebe was a Civil War Assistant Surgeon and served at the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg.

He served in the 157th NY Infantry during part of the Civil War. He held several positions in the community including President of Hamilton Village and served as a delegate to the American Medical Association. He passed in 1893 and was survived by his wife Julia and four children.

I believe the book belonged to the first person in it which I think may have been the wife of the second person in it, James P. There is an ink stamp in the beginning that can be seen in the photos and the best that I can make from it is S. The first person has the right first 2 initials S. And the second person has the right last name that fits (Wilcox), so this was probably done before they wed and what you see is her maiden name.

James Wilcox went on to also become a prominent figure in Smyrna New York along with many others that are in this book. He was made the "Overseer of the Poor" at one time and also served other posts through time. I also found that M. Dixon in 1879 became the Fire Warden for the town and he also served in other posts along with operating the Mott C.

There is also some written poetry in the book and many references to "Hattie" which may have been a nickname of the owner of the book. Some of the poems and inscriptions are from different towns and villages in New York State such as Hornellsville, Hamilton, Manchester, Lebanon, Cayuga Co. Madison, are more from Smyrna NY than any other place. There are also references to a "Reading School" in some of the later inscriptions. The book measures about 8" by 5 1/4" and shows light wear on edges.

There is just enough wear to give it an antique look and great "feel". The pages are tight and show light yellowing and light foxing as to be expected. The bindings are full leather embossed with beautiful gilt lettering and designs.

It has gold page edges also. The book does have some blank pages. The spine is beginning to separate from the binding but it still is holding together and the hinges operate well in opening and closing the book. I have had many autograph books in my life but not one as unique as this one. This would make a fine addition to any museum or private collection.
