1834 Civil War carried New Testament American Bible Society Michigan KJV antique

  

1834 American Bible Society New Testament owned, and very likely carried by a Civil War veteran from Michigan. In G condition, bound in original full brown sheep. 12mo, about 6" x 3 3/4" x 1.

Binding is in surprisingly good condition for its age, period, and amount of use. Full sheep binding is worn and scuffed, with some losses to the outermost layers of the spine. Corners bumped, but only one a trifle split. Text block is worn, signs of frequent use, perhaps water/humidity damage, as the pages are rather wavy, but are thick and strong. Text mostly clean, apart from the odd stain, or pencil mark in the margin.

Provenance comes from many ink and pencil inscriptions to the endpapers. Quintus Foster (1820s-1891) of Milford, and later Hartland, Michigan served in two different units in the Civil War.

The ink and pencil inscriptions look like they were done by him as a child or adolescent, which would give this book great sentimental value, increasing the likelihood he brought it into battle. Battery H, also called De Golyer's Battery, formed in 1862 and participated in the Western Theater, particularly the Vicksburg Campaign and the Siege of Atlanta.

The 3rd Michigan Cavalry also fought along the Mississippi, and a soldier in Company B earned the Medal of Honor. The 3rd Cavalry finished the war in Louisiana, and spent time in Texas in 1865, using San Antonio as a base to scout along the Rio Grande until 1866. Foster was not in Galveston for June 19, as the 3rd Michigan had only left Shreveport a few days earlier. This Testament has been places and seen so many things! I've done my best to accurately and honestly describe and photograph this item.
